Under natural conditions, Ural owls breed in tree holes or nests of other big birds (e.g. black stork, goshawk, ...). Highest breeding success is achieved in weatherproof hollows. Since there is only a small amount of sufficiently dimensioned hollow trees in commercial forests, nesting boxes are offered as supporting measures. The nesting boxes are made of various materials (e.g. wood, plastic, aluminum) and have been accepted successfully as early as in the third year of the project. Already in 2012, eleven couples bred in nesting boxes in Lower Austria.
